The Knesset, Israel’s government, has approved further restrictions on alcohol marketing. All alcohol marketing on billboards and public transport will be prohibited, while media outlets are only allowed to present strictly ‘informative’ advertisements, without models, text, or praise for the product.
“Newspaper headlines about 12-year-old kids who are taken to the hospital because of alcohol will become a thing of the past,” author of the bill Danny Danon was quoted on Ynetnews.com.
The new rules also stipulate that strong alcoholic drinks (15% or more) carry a warning label, detailing that excessive alcohol consumption presents a health danger and could pose a fatal risk.
A study by the Knesset Research and Information Center found that 60% of Israeli youths drink alcohol. Israel is ranked second in Europe in the prevalence of drinking alcohol by 11-year olds – 19%.
