The government has been limiting alcohol advertising in Cambodia while balancing the requirement to maintain the long-term viability of economic growth following a long period with an excess of alcohol advertising, according to Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra.

Pheaktra made these remarks while presiding over the signing ceremony for the “Code of Conduct for Responsible Marketing and Commercial Relations of Alcohol Products in Cambodia” at the Sofitel Hotel in Phnom Penh yesterday.

Speaking on this occasion, Pheaktra noted that the growth of alcohol advertising in the Kingdom has caused a proliferation of alcohol related imagery all over the country.

“With the growth of the alcohol industry in Cambodia, it has brought great benefits to the national economy, but it has also negatively impacted the national economy, society and traditional culture through the promotion of alcohol,” said Pheaktra. “It has badly influenced, through rigorous advertising of alcohol on social media, a large number of breweries competing within the alcohol advertising market to attract individual customers, which sometimes is overrated.”

The government has also established mechanisms, procedures, legal standards, and a working group to manage alcohol advertising products, chaired by the Ministry of Information.

“The formation of this alcohol product advertising management team did not come just randomly; it came following the phenomenon of live media events that excessively feature alcohol products,” Pheaktra noted.
