 Alcohol companies are now capitalizing on promoting healthier lifestyles and sugar-free products which lead consumers into considering them as less harmful.

Still, a recent study from the Cancer Council Victoria claim that they are indeed harmful to your health and do not even contain accurate nutrition information in their labels.

Jane Martin, executive manager of the Obesity Policy Coalition, said the lack of transparency can impact decision-making. Furthermore, she stated that: “by not providing access to basic information like energy content, that is standardized across all products, consumers must rely solely on these health-oriented marketing claims without being able to verify them or compare products to make an informed decision”.  

Food Standards Australia New Zealand is currently considering labelling of alcoholic beverages as it relates to carbohydrate and sugar claims along with energy labelling.
